Colombian Protestant Churches Document their Suffering and their Hope, Edition 3

A 2007 report of human rights violations against churches and their peacebuilding initiatives.
Jueves 5 marzo 2009, por Janna Hunter-Bowman ·

During the report period of 2007, program volunteers documented 27 assassinations of men, women and children linked to congregations, 95 cases of forced displacement, 172 death threats and other human rights and International Humanitarian Law violations. All parties to the armed conflict participated in committing these violations suffered by members of more than 18 Evangelical and Protestant churches, a minority group estimated at more than five million people. Also documented in this report are ongoing social restoration and peacebuilding initiatives undertaken by faith communities.

The information compiled in this report is based on fieldwork carried out by regional teams of the Documentation and Advocacy Program. To address the underlying factors that both cause and allow unacceptable violence to continue, the churches call for specific changes in Colombian, U.S., Canadian and European policy. The report concludes with these recommendations.

We invite you to share this compelling data, pray for the victims, the perpetrators and the peacemakers, and advocate—speak truth to government officials—on behalf of faithful churches that despite persecution continue to give life to seeds of hope.

Please help us distribute this report widely. We invite church and advocacy organizations to reproduce, in part or whole, this report as useful in education and advocacy efforts.
